Lynx Blue Line Extension & Capacity Expansion
Overhauling for capacity expansion.
Overhauling for capacity expansion.
Overview
The Lynx Blue Line Extension (BLE) was a 9.3-mile light rail extension that connected with the existing Blue Line at 7th Street Station in Center City, Charlotte, creating an 18.6-mile North/South rapid transit line. The project also included retrofitting the existing Blue Line to support capacity expansion.
Scope of Work
The BLE project featured 11 new light rail stations, 20 at-grade crossings, and 11 grade-separated structures over or under roads, railroads, and environmental features. Modern Railway Systems (MRS) was responsible for designing, furnishing, and installing the signal and communications systems. The communications systems included a new headend for train control (TDX), SCADA, CCTV, and public address/variable message signs (PA/VMS). MRS provided all communications design and equipment, including CCTV, telephones, signal houses, cab signaling (CTS), and PA/VMS systems.
Impact
The project improved transit capacity, reliability, and connectivity across Charlotte’s light rail network. The upgraded signal and communications systems enhanced operational safety, streamlined train control, and delivered a more efficient and reliable experience for passengers along the extended corridor.
