Gilbert Road Light Rail Extension
Supporting systems and traction power for a critical light rail extension.
Supporting systems and traction power for a critical light rail extension.
Overview
This project involved a 1.9-mile light rail extension along Main Street, extending from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road. The project included the construction of stations, two traction power substations, an operator’s facility, a new transit center station, and a park-and-ride lot.
Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) was responsible for the traction power substations, signal systems, Overhead Catenary Systems (OCS), and wayside equipment. Our work included furnishing, installing, testing, and commissioning CCTV, SCADA, public address systems, variable message signs (VMS), communication and traction cabinets, intrusion detection, and cab signaling equipment.
A unique aspect of the project was the construction of a roadway roundabout that the light rail passes through, making it only the second project in the U.S. with this type of interface. This required complex train and traffic signaling design, as well as updates to underground utilities and traffic signals.
Impact
The project enhanced transit accessibility and connectivity in the corridor while ensuring safe and efficient operations through the innovative roundabout interface. The upgraded systems improved passenger experience, operational reliability, and integration with local traffic infrastructure.
