Windsor Extension

Overview
The SMART Windsor Extension project added 3.3 miles of commuter rail infrastructure, extending service north and supporting continued growth along the corridor. The project included a new station, five public grade crossings, eight signal houses, bridge replacements, and upgrades to SMART’s dispatch and communications systems.

Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) oversaw the full systems scope, coordinating signal and communications delivery in alignment with civil construction activities. The work required integration with SMART’s existing alignment and operating systems, coordination with multiple permitting agencies, and close collaboration among project stakeholders. Systems were designed, installed, tested, and commissioned within an active rail corridor under tight schedules and operational constraints.

Impact
The project successfully expanded SMART’s rail service while maintaining safe and reliable operations throughout construction. The completed extension improved regional connectivity, enhanced operational capability, and supported SMART’s long-term service and regulatory objectives.
