West Corridor Light Rail Transit Project
Expanding a busy alignment in downtown Denver.
Expanding a busy alignment in downtown Denver.
Overview
This task order-based contract supported the extension of 12 miles of light rail alignment from downtown Denver to Golden, serving the Jefferson County Justice Center. The project included a mix of ballasted double track and single track and expanded RTD’s light rail network through complex urban and suburban conditions.
Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) was responsible for designing, furnishing, installing, testing, and commissioning the train control system and highway crossing warning systems for the full 12-mile extension. The work encompassed 9 miles of ballasted double track, 3 miles of single track, 12 stations, and 18 bridges, including 13 light rail bridges and 3 pedestrian bridges. The scope also included 3 tunnel structures, 10 interlockings, and 21 at-grade crossings. In addition, the project involved extensive civil infrastructure such as retaining walls, parking structures, and major earthwork activities. A critical component of the work was tying the new alignment into an extremely busy portion of the existing system in downtown Denver, which required careful coordination to maintain ongoing operations.
Impact
The project expanded regional mobility by extending light rail service to new communities while maintaining safe and reliable operations on the existing network. MRS’ systems expertise ensured seamless integration, enhanced safety at crossings and interlockings, and dependable train control performance across one of RTD’s most complex system expansions.
