Overview
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) continues to support the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) through a range of on-call task orders. One of the initial assignments focused on optimizing rail operations. MRS originally commissioned its Track Driver eXtra (TDX) system for CATS in 2018 as part of the Blue Line Extension project.
Recognizing the need to strengthen technical knowledge among new Maintenance of Way employees, CATS partnered with MRS to conduct a two-day training session on Train Control System operations. The training improved the team’s ability to identify and resolve field issues, enhancing operational efficiency and system reliability.
Scope of Work
MRS also modified field operations at both terminals of the Lynx Blue Line, including the I-485 Station and the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) Station. Previously, trains were required to stop at red signals before entering the platform and request dispatcher approval to proceed, often leading to delays.
To improve performance, MRS reviewed and updated the hardware design provided by HNTB, revised the train control software to allow trains to receive clear signals and cab speeds directly, and adjusted field wiring to align with these updates. The team conducted both static and dynamic testing to confirm proper system functionality.
Impact
Through these task orders, MRS is helping CATS deliver a safer, more efficient, and reliable light rail system. Supporting mobility and reducing congestion in one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions.
