Overview
Amtrak upgraded its I-ETMS system across all main tracks at Chicago Union Terminal, with Modern Railway Systems (MRS) providing installation and upgrade services for the wayside Positive Train Control (PTC) equipment. The project required careful coordination to manage the challenges of working within one of the busiest rail hubs in the country.
Scope of Work
MRS installed fiber optic equipment and integrated wiring logic controllers into existing houses at four control points. The team also installed a new signal house and replaced the Genisys units at the Taylor control point. One of the major control points was completely rebuilt and tested, including the addition of a three-track cantilever. MRS also replaced outdated equipment at two major interlockings, ensuring improved reliability and system performance.
Impact
These upgrades enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability for one of Amtrak’s most complex and heavily trafficked rail networks.
