Overview
This CM/CG project extended SANDAG’s Blue Line by adding eleven miles north from the existing Old Town station to the University of California San Diego campus. The work included constructing stations, bridges, utilities, roadway improvements, traction power infrastructure, an Overhead Catenary System, railroad coordination, retaining walls, testing, and startup activities.
Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) was awarded the systems contract for signals, communications, the overhead catenary system (OCS), and the coordination of thirteen new traction power substations along with the rehabilitation of two existing substations. The scope included designing, procuring, and installing forty two signal cases, more than four hundred fifty OCS poles, and communications systems for nine new stations, including both at grade and elevated locations. MRS also procured and tested the communications systems for the new stations and furnished all train control vital networking equipment.
Impact
This project demonstrated MRS’ ability to deliver large scale, complex infrastructure upgrades within an active urban environment. The extended Blue Line now provides more reliable service, increased capacity, and improved connectivity for the San Diego region, supporting long term mobility and community growth.
