Caltrain Electrification
Transforming Caltrain with electrification.
Transforming Caltrain with electrification.
Overview
This 52-mile project spans 17 cities and three counties from San Francisco to San Jose, marking a major milestone for Caltrain. The transition from diesel locomotive units to electric multiple units required innovative design, close collaboration, and the complete installation, testing, and commissioning of electrification systems throughout the corridor.
Scope of Work
As part of a once-in-a-generation upgrade, Modern Railway Systems (MRS) modified Caltrain’s entire signal, communications, and grade crossing warning systems to accommodate electric passenger trainsets. MRS upgraded the existing system to operate with an AC electrified network and integrated it with a Positive Train Control (PTC) system. The comprehensive scope included full design, supply, electrified track circuit replacement, installation, and regulatory testing of new wayside signal cases and houses covering more than 1,000 routes. Additionally, 54 constant warning grade crossings were upgraded to support electrified operations.
Impact
These advancements have improved Caltrain’s performance, efficiency, capacity, and safety while significantly reducing the environmental impact along the corridor.
