NICTD Double Track
Bettering rail infrastructure across Northern Indiana.
Bettering rail infrastructure across Northern Indiana.
Overview
This project added more than sixteen miles of second track to Northern Indiana’s commuter rail system. The improvements included constructing four new bridges, eight platforms, new parking facilities, and replacing the single street running track in Michigan City with two separate ballasted tracks to improve safety, reliability, and capacity.
Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) designed the signal and communications systems and furnished, installed, and tested the communications systems on an electrified system. This work covered 155 locations across three segments. The scope included installing a control point, new crossings, signal houses, and Siemens GCE 5000s paired with PSO cases to activate the crossings. It also included configuring 5 hand throw and electric lock cases and installing 6 cantilevers for crossings and signal indications. MRS installed 10 fiber communication houses and equipped 4 platforms with cameras, ticket vending machines, speakers, and variable message signage to support a modern and fully integrated network.
Impact
These upgrades improved operational reliability, reduced travel time variability, and increased system capacity for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. The new double track and modernized communication and signal systems enhanced safety and efficiency across the corridor, supporting long term growth and better service for riders.
