MTS Orange Line Trolley Improvement

Modernizing critical infrastructure to improve reliability and service along the Orange Line.

About the Project

The San Diego MTS Orange Line project modernizes nearly 7 miles of the existing Orange Line between 32nd Street and Commercial Avenue and the Massachusetts Trolley Station.

The project upgrades critical signaling, crossing, and overhead catenary system (OCS) infrastructure to improve the safety, reliability, and long-term performance of the corridor.

Work
The project includes:

  • replacing 21 signal houses
  • upgrading signal and grade crossing equipment
  • installing 4 new crossovers
  • completing the associated OCS and switch modifications

These improvements modernize infrastructure while increasing operational flexibility throughout the corridor.

Impact
Once complete, the rehabilitation will enhance system reliability, improve service continuity, and support safer, more efficient operations for both MTS and its riders. By investing in critical infrastructure today, the project helps ensure the Orange Line is prepared to meet the region's transportation needs well into the future.
