Federal Way Link Extension
Strengthening system services for a rapidly expanding transit network.
Strengthening system services for a rapidly expanding transit network.
Overview
The Federal Way Link Extension was a 7.8-mile light rail expansion on the Sound Transit Link network, extending service from Angle Lake, WA, to Federal Way, WA. The project strengthened regional mobility and connectivity while supporting the continued growth of Sound Transit’s network. Modern Railway Systems (MRS) was responsible for the communications, radio, and signal systems for this extension.
Scope of Work
MCS provided engineering and commissioning services for the Communications Subsystems across three stations, three garages, and two ancillary buildings. The scope also included Traction Power Substations, provided by partner MEC, Signal Bungalows, provided by MRS, as well as Emergency Access Points and Trackway Intrusion Detection equipment along the wayside.
The Communication Subsystems included Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), emergency and back-of-house phones, audio and visual public address systems, access control, radio systems, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) for train control, building management, and emergency ventilation.
A key feature of this project was that all communications racks and cabinets were built and wired in Denver, ensuring high-quality fabrication and standardization across all subsystems.
Impact
The project enhanced operational reliability and safety for Sound Transit’s network. Advanced communications, signaling, and radio systems improved situational awareness, streamlined operations, and enhanced passenger safety. The Federal Way Link Extension provided a vital transit connection for communities, supporting sustainable and efficient regional mobility.
