FrontRunner North Commuter Rail
Establishing foundations for future success.
Establishing foundations for future success.
Overview
This project marked the initial segment of UTA's FrontRunner system, the first commuter rail line in UTA's network. Spanning 44 miles of ballasted track adjacent to the UPRR mainline, the project included 35 at-grade crossings, many equipped with "quiet zone" features. The work required extensive coordination with UPRR, UDOT, school districts, bus agencies, and multiple city agencies.
Scope of Work
Modern Railway Systems (MRS) provided a comprehensive wayside and 79 mph cab signal system, including a control office, 24 interlockings, 27 cut sections, and 28 grade crossings. The project also included the installation of 23 sets of carborne cab signal equipment on UTA’s fleet of locomotives and cab cars.
Impact
This foundational project established the framework for UTA's commuter rail service. The upgraded systems ensured safe and efficient operations, enhanced reliability, and set the stage for the continued expansion of the FrontRunner network.
