Metra - 16th St. Interlocking
Modern systems for one of America's iconic transit providers.
Modern systems for one of America's iconic transit providers.
Overview
The 16th Street Interlocking project supports Metra in modernizing a critical section of its network. Designed, furnished, and delivered by Modern Railway Systems (MRS), the project replaces aging infrastructure with advanced technology that enhances operational control and reliability. MRS will also provide Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) support and cutover support to ensure a seamless transition into service.
Scope of Work
The scope includes the design and deployment of a new interlocking system featuring 11 power operated switch machines, 6 new signal houses, 5 new signal structures, and 6 new MLPs.
A key component of the project is coordination with Canadian National Railway for track crossing integration, ensuring compatibility and uninterrupted operations across shared infrastructure.
Impact
Once complete, the 16th Street Interlocking will improve operational flexibility, system reliability, and long term maintainability. The upgraded infrastructure will provide enhanced control over train movements, streamline coordination between rail operators, and strengthen overall network performance. By delivering modernized signaling and interlocking capabilities, the project supports a safe, efficient, and resilient rail system for the region.
