Construction Safety Week: Recognize. Respond. Respect.
Construction Safety Week provided an opportunity for teams across Modern Railway Systems (MRS) to reinforce a shared commitment to protecting people, strengthening communication, and creating safer jobsites through every phase of work.
This year’s themes, Recognize, Respond, and Respect, focused on addressing the ongoing challenge of serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) by encouraging proactive planning, hazard awareness, and accountability at every level of a project.
Recognize
Safety starts with awareness.
Throughout the week, teams focused on identifying high energy hazards and STCKY activities, the stuff that can kill you, before work begins. Recognizing hazards early and openly discussing risks allows crews to put the right controls in place before problems arise.
By using tools like hazard identification models and the Energy Wheel, workers are better equipped to recognize changing conditions, communicate concerns, and help prevent incidents before they happen.
Respond
Responding to hazards is about taking action before an incident occurs.
Planning, preparation, and communication remain critical to every successful construction project. Teams revisited the importance of eliminating, reducing, or isolating hazards through proper planning and applying the Hierarchy of Controls to reduce exposure to risk.
Respect
Respecting the plan means more than following instructions. It means creating a culture where every worker feels empowered to speak up, reassess conditions, and use Stop Work Authority when something does not feel right.
Conditions on jobsites can change quickly, making continuous communication and collaboration essential. By respecting processes, adapting to changing conditions, and looking out for one another, teams help prevent incidents and strengthen the culture of safety across every project.
A Shared Commitment
Construction Safety Week is more than a yearly initiative. It reflects the mindset and responsibility carried by teams every day in the field, in the office, and across every project site.
At MRS, safety remains foundational to how we work, plan, and deliver. Through early hazard recognition, proactive planning, open communication, and mutual accountability, we continue working toward safer outcomes for our employees, partners, and the communities we serve.
